There were also some plot reveals and twists that felt *very* similar to events that happened in the other books, and I saw one twist coming a mile off for this very reason. Booktopia has The Everlasting Rose-The Belles Series, Book 2, Belles by Dhonielle Clayton. Title: The BellesSeries: The Belles 1Published by: FreeformRelease Date: February 6, 2018Pages: 448ISBN13: 978-1484728499Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. I did like that it was a self-contained story without much of a cliff-hanger ending, but I honestly wouldn’t have minded another 100 or so pages, or even another book to have made this story feel fleshed out. Each of the trials only get a few chapters at the most and I would have loved more detail and more to happen in each one - particularly the first and last tasks which felt barely fleshed out. We hardly know anything about the other 7 competitors in the trials and this makes for low stakes when some of them are eventually killed off. Unfortunately, the whole book felt so rushed (just the same as Book 2 did), which was really disappointing. The plot of The Beauty Trials is really exciting: as the City of Orleans is imploding, an age-old tradition of The Beauty Trials is resurrected to declare the new Queen. ![]() My usual complaint with books is that they are too long, my most used reviewer phrase is ‘needs some editing to cut it down’, so I go very much against the grain by saying that I wanted more from this story. ![]()

As they draw closer, Charlotte must accept her free spirit and learn to make friends, while Alex has to come to terms with childhood abuse by his parents and his own fear of intimacy. As the two careen around the countryside in Alex’s decrepit Irish cottage with his butler, Bixby, in search of the dangerous, wedding-obsessed witch who has stolen the amulet, arguing over who has kidnapped whom, they also tumble into bedroom activities. The gossamer-thin plot, in which Charlotte and Alex jostle to retrieve a magical amulet that belonged to a legendary witch, is mainly an excuse for clever banter, scenes of flying houses straight out of a Pixar movie, and jokey allusions to Jane Austen’s oeuvre. A screwball adventure within a paranormal comedy of manners.Ĭharlotte Pettifer, the prophesied leader of the Wicken League of Gentlewomen Witches, stumbles into pirate Alex O’Riley while stealing a briefcase and just manages to escape by flying a bicycle over the roofs of London: Thus begins Holton’s second madcap rom-com about magic and mores in an alternate Britain, following The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels (2021). ![]() ![]() ![]() Through the story of Opal Lee's determination and persistence, children ages 4 to 8 will learn: She had to do something!
